Scientific name : Lipaphis erysimi

Description:

Aphids are small, soft-bodied, pearl-shaped insects that have a pair of cornicle (honey tubes) projecting out from the 5 or 6 abdominal segment. Wingless aphids are yellowish,gray or olive green colour and winged aphids are dusky green colour. The aphids attacks generally during December to March months because cloudy and cold weather helps in hurrying the growth. The most favourable temperature is 20°C or below.

Symptoms of damage:

1. Infested the all stages like vegetative, flowering and fruiting.


2. Both nymph and adults suck the sap from leaves, buds and pods.


3. The infected leaves are curling and at advanced stage plants may dry and die.


4. Plant growth decreased and sooty moulds grow for aphids secrete honeydew.


5. The infected field looks sickly.


Management:

1.Timely sowing (Before 15th October).


2. Use tolerant varieties (JM- 1and RK- 9501).


3. Needed seed treatment with Imidacloprid 70% WS (10gm / KG seed).


4. Used yellow sticky trap (12-15 nos / acre).


5. Destroy affected plants in initial stage.


6. Use border crops (Maize and Sorghum).


7. Use Azadirechtin 1% EC @ 3 ml / liter of water.


8. Apply recommended dose of fertilizers.


9. Uses recommended chemical insecticide.
