Tony writes: When I was asked to write a poem about The Clash, I liked the idea of using the discipline of the 14-line formal sonnet (meaning 'little song') to eulogise a disciplined, principled band with short-sharp songs. There's also a centuries-old tradition of political sonnets. Many of the poem's lines and the title are references to Clash lyrics. The poem is a wake-up call and rallying cry to the bands and artists of today to stand for something, to mean something, to rise above a "shit parade" dominated by X-Factor and bland, corporate pop. What happened to music that challenges the status quo instead of helping to embed its values of greed and selfishness and warfare?
