SHERMAN AYRES - AMERICANA ARTIST - WACO, TX
This video made possible with the support of H&B Packing (Waco, TX).
The lives of those around us are typically defined by what the world sees: career titles, volunteer roles, family milestones. But on rare occasions, you meet a person whose creative life has been entirely too unseen.
For decades, Waco transplant Sherman Ayres led, served, and gave back in ways that helped build a stronger community. But what he rarely shared—not even with those closest to him—was that he was also writing songs. Dozens of them. Honest, elegant, and mostly unheard.
Until now.
This Saturday night, recorded LIVE in front of a sold-out audience at Texas Music Cafe, Ayres will perform songs he’s written in stolen hours, late-night work shifts, and moments of faith. And, for the first time, they’ll sound like what he’s been hearing all along.
The turning point came earlier this year after a Texas Music Cafe board meeting. Chris Ermoian, TMC’s founder and an old acquaintance, asked what he was doing with his music. Ayres waved it off—he figured that part of his life was mostly behind him. But Ermoian followed up: the TMC stage was available, and hundreds of thousands of people watched their videos online. That planted a seed.
A few days later, Ayres dropped by Ermoian’s house with a stack of old cassette tapes—rough recordings going back decades. They sat and listened. When it was over, Ermoian leaned back and said, “That’s Americana. That’s what people are listening to now.”
The lineup includes guitarist Rodney Pyeatt (who’s played with Selena, Mike McClure, and Stoney LaRue), bassist Cedric Ballou (son of Waco blues legend Classie Ballou), drummer Jeremy Bryant (a fixture on Texas stages), and pianist Andrew Still—a talented newcomer with deep local roots but limited live experience.
For eight weeks, they rehearsed at Texas Music Cafe. At first, Ayres wasn’t sure it would click. The tempos felt off, the feel wasn’t quite right. But he held the line. He slowed things down when the words demanded space and insisted on grooves over flash. It reminded him of a science experiment—adding drops of fluid one at a time into a beaker of water, waiting for a reaction that never seems to come. Then, suddenly, it does.
“We had a practice a couple weeks ago, man, and the water turned blue,” he says. “It was all I could do to keep the tears out of my eyes.” Live at Last
On Saturday night, Sherman Ayres takes the stage at Texas Music Cafe to perform a set he’s carried for more than four decades. The show is already sold out, but the music will live on in a live album—one that reflects not just what he wrote but how he always wanted it to sound.
