STORYLINE:
The defense ministers of Japan, Britain and Italy on Thursday signed a convention in Tokyo to establish a joint organization to co-develop their planned next-planned advanced jet fighter, as the countries push to bolster their cooperation in both military operations and equipment in the face of growing threat from China, Russia and North Korea.

A year ago in December, the three countries agreed on a plan to merge their earlier individual plans – Japan’s Mitsubishi F-X to succeed the retiring F-2s developed with the United States, and Britain’s Tempest, a successor to the Eurofighter Typhoon – to produce the new combat aircraft for deployment in 2035.

Japan, which is currently pursuing a rapid military buildup, hopes to have greater capability in countering China’s increasing assertiveness and allow Britain a bigger presence in the Indo-Pacific region.

Defense Minister Minoru Kihara said that co-developing the fighter jet would "maintain air superiority and effective deterrence in the vicinity of Japan".
