Addiction in and of itself presents some interesting questions. For example, if it’s really an addiction, how are even the most hardcore, bottomed-out addicts able to get sober while some pick and put down, or like Amber, hold several addictions within a lifetime. The only answer I can come up with is sheer tenacity. Sobriety itself is a reflection of the commitment an addict has to sobriety because unlike anything else, he/she has total control over it.
Food addiction IS distinct from other addictions in the sense that we must eat to live; I’ve noticed that many recovering food addicts will shift their addiction to shopping, because, like food, one must buy certain things in order to live. It is an alternate form of consumption. And Amber is correct. Everyone has their own individual issues.
Life is painful and intense, ergo the health of one’s coping mechanisms is therefore no matter. I usually see a great deal of disgust when it comes to Amber’s self-pitying monologues. What’s interesting though, is that, in a way, her disordered mind unabashedly allows her to be on camera what others are behind closed doors, so that when people attack her, it is for a twofold reason: what she is and what she represents. And, again, her own psychology protects her from the potential torment of any would-be “haydurs” - as if the years of pain and abuse have been permanently lodged in the greasy, subcutaneous fat that envelops her. She loves her blankets. Her distrust and fear will see to it that she does not see her 40th birthday.
More to the point, though: admission to the knowledge that you have an addiction and then refusing to find appropriate help for it creates just another insufficient excuse. THAT is the failure. People would react to this sit-down much differently if, say, it was within the larger context of a discussion re: a decision to join a twelve-step, or get a sponsor, or go to rehab.
Instead, like all the other addicts in our lives, she sits there and lies her ass off. And like all the other painful reminders of our daily lives, we choose to laugh; because if we cried I fear that some of us, myself included, might not be able to stop.
I dunno. I need my coffee.
