Regardless of your gardening skills, insects don’t discriminate. Gardening in spring or any time of the year is a mixture of knowledge, skill, and frustration. The insects move in overnight, Sue recommends taking some time to wander around the garden, notice things, if something strange wasn’t there before check it out. 🤔🔎

This is important in all parts of the garden particularly the vegie garden. Large green leaves are a favourite for many insects and strong healthy plants will usually be able to offend of an attack from many critters. Regular applications of Seasol Liquid Concentrate will also help to create strong healthy plants to reduce the effects of an insect attack. If you are not sure what is eating your plants in the vegie garden, a few simple solutions can help:

1. Placing the halves of juiced lemons upside down on the soil and leaving overnight will reveal in the morning what bugs and insects are around. Often tatted leaves on young seedlings are the work of slaters feeding overnight.

A slaters role in the garden is to break down dead and decaying matter, the problem is when seedlings are very small and have only just been planted they are much tastier than the organic matter in the mulch around them. Once they get a little bit bigger, they are not affected by the damage.

2. If you are unsure what is causing the damage, one of the easiest ways of identification is to take a piece of blank paper and flick the foliage or plant onto the paper. If it is small insects such as thrips or aphids, it will make it very easy to see.

On any edible crops, it is important to control soft bodied insects with something that is safe, particularly when you go to harvest the produce continually. You may be familiar with pyrethrum daisy; this plant is ideal with herbs and vegies and repels insects in the ground.

EarthCare Natural Pyrethrum insect spray from the makers of Seasol, does that job for you. In a ready-to-use bottle it controls leafhoppers, ants, flies, thrips, aphids, earwigs, caterpillars and even cabbage moths. Make sure to shake the bottle before use, keeping it agitated.

Being 100% natural, it’s environmentally friendly, has low toxicity and a withholding period of 1 day, which means what is sprayed today can be eaten tomorrow. It can be used on many different crops and plants such as flowers, indoor and outdoor plants, ornamentals, vegetables, and fruit trees. Spray when pests are active ensuring the underside of foliage is covered, ensure to spray on a calm day.

Making sure to look out for holes in the middle of the leaves. If you have many small moths hanging around that fly away quickly and are hard to see. These moths would most likely be the work of an incredibly destructive pest called a diamond bat moth.

When it lands and the wings are together the little markings form the shape of a diamond. The larvae is small, bright green and always on the underside of the leaves, a few squirts of EarthCare Natural Pyrethrum insect spray will keep them at bay.

Aphids are sap syphoning insects that are easy to see and often congregate in clumps. Get to them quickly or they will take over the whole garden.

EarthCare Natural Pyrethrum is the key to insect control the safe way, ready-to-use no mixing required and no waste. A go-to solution for the visitors that you don’t want in your garden!
