The Carbon Sugar Snake combines a combustion reaction and two decomposition reactions to produce a carbon "snake" that seems to grow right out of the sand.
In the initial chemical reaction, the combustion of sugar produces CO2 gas, water vapor, and heat energy. This is followed by a reaction where the decomposition of some of the remaining sugar produces carbon and water vapor. It is this reaction that produces the black carbon "snake". Finally, CO2 gas bubbles produced from the decomposition of baking soda provide volume that helps the snake to grow out from the container. All together, the reactions create one cool carbon snake.
