Описание к видео Snoring - What to do if your partner snores?

https://www.lungandsleep.com.au

Snoring is one of the most common and often overlooked concerns presenting to our sleep clinic at Lung and Sleep.

In this video, Dr Tim Cheung talks about snoring, sleep apnoea and treatment options.

Snoring arises from the vibration of relaxed muscles in the throat, obstructed airflow, and specific anatomical structures of the mouth such as a long soft palate or thickened tissue. Contributing factors include nasal issues like chronic congestion or a deviated septum, sleeping on your back and lifestyle factors such as alcohol consumption or obesity. While many view snoring as merely an annoyance, its implications can stretch far beyond disrupted sleep patterns.

Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) is a condition where there are pauses in breathing, choking or gasping during sleep, and daytime sleepiness. The connection between snoring and OSA is strong, with snoring often being the telltale sign of the more severe sleep disorder. Diagnosis typically revolves around sleep studies, known as polysomnography, or at-home sleep apnea tests which can provide insights into the depth and nature of the condition.

Addressing snoring and its larger implications necessitates a multi-faceted approach. Simple snoring remedies range from lifestyle adjustments like weight management or sidestepping sedatives before sleep, to external solutions such as nasal strips or specialized oral appliances. OSA, on the other hand, demands more intensive interventions. Treatments include Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) devices, mandibular advancement splints (MAS), positional therapy, or even surgical procedures such as Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP) or Maxillomandibular advancement.

Recognizing and addressing snoring, especially when it hints at OSA, is of paramount importance. Not just for the promise of a good night's sleep but for overarching health and well-being. Anyone experiencing severe snoring or signs of OSA is encouraged to see their GP.
