A shocking cyber fraud has been reported from Bengaluru. A 57 year old woman lost rupees 3.75 crore after being duped through an AI generated deepfake video of spiritual leader Sadhguru. The victim, a resident of CV Raman Nagar, came across a video where a Sadhguru lookalike claimed he had been investing with a trading platform. The video encouraged viewers to pay USD 250, submit personal details, and start trading. Soon after, she was contacted by a company representative and began investing. Between February and April, she transferred a total of rupees 3.75 crore into the platform. But when she tried to withdraw profits, she realized it was a scam. Police have registered a case under cybercrime provisions and are investigating. In August, former Karnataka BJP MLA Gundappa Vakil also lost nearly rupees 30.99 lakh in a “digital arrest” scam. Fraudsters impersonated CBI and ED officials, and even staged a fake online court hearing, accusing him of money laundering. Under pressure, Vakil transferred rupees 10 lakh first, and later rupees 20 lakh more, believing it was required for a property related investigation. But the money was never returned. The Cyber Crime Police are now investigating. Both cases highlight the growing threat of online scams and deepfake technology. Staying alert and cautious online is the only protection.
