Afro-Latinos are amongst those affected by systemic racism as they have been underrepresented in history and the media for years. According to the 2017 U.S Census, there were more than 3 million Afro-Latinos living in the United States.

Over the years the community has increased their visibility sparking the conversation of what it means to be Afro Latino. Previous Pew Research Center studies show that Afro-Latinos made up a quarter of the Hispanic population, yet not all Latinos are convinced BLM concerns them.

South Florida Access reporter Paola Marcano-Bolívar talked to Orlando J. Addison, an Afro-Latino leader and founder of the Ernesto Gamboa Project and the Afro-Latino Excellence Summit, works on increasing the representation of his community. He said that anyone who thinks Black Lives Matter doesn’t affect them is “living in a bubble” while others on the outside are constantly being hurt and discriminated against.
