You know what happens when you buy plants or bulbs in the dead of winter? You buy way too many of EVERYTHING.

It’s happened to me before, with dahlias, with bare root roses, with tulips and you guessed it, Iris.

Only these arrived at what is arguably the toughest part of the gardening season, July and early August. It’s hot, it’s humid, it doesn’t rain for weeks and then 4 inches comes down in 24 hours. If there was seasonal affective disorder for summer, this is the time it hits. The weeds, the humidity, the sun, the humidity, the work, the planting, the humidity. You cannot walk around without defining the word schvitz. And there’s not even a ton of flowers yet, the spring stuff is gone, the rest of the stuff is coming for Fall. My point is that this time of year is a grind in the garden.

So because I am way past my limit for how many more plants I can put in the ground and because when you order from indie growers like those listed below, they not only send you the rhizomes you order but bonus iris. I got over 50 bonuses between the 4 growers I ordered from. 50. And when I compiled my master list, there were some that were duplicates and some that weren’t quite my colors, some colors that I felt I had too many of and by the way this is all before I got them in the ground. I just couldn’t keep them all, I had to pot them up because the beds are still a work in progress. I decided that I would try to keep as close to my original plan as possible and that number was 135 give or take a few that I couldn’t resist from the bonuses.

If you’re new here, I plan my gardens with color palettes in mind first. It comes from designing weddings for so many years, my knowledge of how colors and specific flowers combine to make each other look better is deeply ingrained in my visual memory. And I tend to collect flowering plants that I enjoy making floral designs with, that are sometimes barely available as cut flowers and bearded iris are definitely one of those plants.
