Welcome back MechanicaLEi, did you know that the elimination of the individual marking, positioning, and frequent checking enables jigs and fixtures to drastically reduce operation time? This makes us wonder, What are Jigs and Fixtures?
Before we jump in check out the previous part of this series to learn about what major parts of an IC engine are? Now, A jig is a type of custom-made tool used to control the location and/or motion of parts or other tools. A jig's primary purpose is to provide repeatability, accuracy, and interchangeability in the manufacturing of products. The most common type of jig is the drill jig, which acts as a stencil and guides the drill bit for creating holes at desired locations. Using drill jigs increases production rate drastically by eliminating the time spent using measuring instruments and scales to locate the drill points. Shown here is one such jig made out of Cast Iron and used for guiding Welding operations. Fixtures are workholders designed for applications where the cutting tools cannot be guided as easily as a drill. With fixtures, an edge finder or center finder blocks position of the cutter. It positions the work; but doesn’t guide, locate or position the cutting tool. The setting of the tool is done by machine adjustment either automatically in case of CNCs or manually in case of employees. It is usually heavy in construction. Shown here is a hole boring fixture used in CNC lathe machines. Hence, we first saw what jigs are and then went on to see what fixtures are?
