This year, while farmers are distressed and worried due to the low and fluctuating prices of sugarcane, camel-cart operators have also been severely affected. Throughout the year, camel-cart owners remained hopeful that the sugarcane season would begin, but this year their faces reflected disappointment and despair.
On one hand, there are efforts to eliminate the gap between farmers and the arthi (middleman) so that the benefit reaches the farmers directly—though this seems unlikely. On the other hand, traders and commission agents in the sugarcane business purchase sugarcane from farmers without any fear of price fluctuations and, with minimal investment and clever tactics, become partners in the farmers’ profits. In the future, farmers may no longer be able to supply sugarcane directly to sugar mills or even have access to them, as mills will purchase sugarcane directly from commission agents.
