Two lots of steel both pass inspection for surface roughness. Yet, when panels made each lot are painted, one looks great, and the other…does not.
How can this be, when the roughness was the same?

The answer is in the surface texture spatial wavelengths. Surface texture consists of a spectrum of spatial wavelengths. We define what we consider "roughness" with cutoffs, based on the application. Trouble can arise, however, when those cutoffs "mask" a problem that falls outside of the measurement range.

In this brief animation we look at how we can use cutoff wavelengths to study various ranges of spatial wavelengths, to spot differences that we might otherwise miss if we are just looking at overall average roughness. When we can see the differences, we can take steps to control them.
And that's the key to a smooth finish.
