In this video, I’m exploring what remains of this scientific utopia today. From the brutalist architecture to the modern-day labs, this is the story of the city that was built to win the Cold War.

Step into the forests of Siberia and discover this unique place — the Soviet Union’s “city of scientists”, built in 1957 as part of Novosibirsk. Once the USSR’s most prestigious research hub, it was home to brilliant minds, unique Soviet architecture, and a surprising amount of freedom behind the Iron Curtain.

In this episode, I explore its streets, culture centres, and universities — from 1960s restaurants to Cold War-era institutes — and show how life continues today in this fascinating scientific utopia in the middle of the Siberian forest.
