"On the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink." John 7:37 [NKJV]

Patience had its perfect work (see James 1:4) in the Lord Jesus, and until the last day of the feast, He pleaded with the Jews, just as on this last day of the year He pleads with us and waits to be gracious to us. Admirable indeed is the longsuffering of the Saviour in bearing with some of us year after year, notwithstanding our provocations, rebellions, and resistance to His Holy Spirit. It is a wonder of wonders that we are still in the land of mercy!

Compassion expressed itself most plainly, for Jesus cried out, which implies not only the loudness of His voice, but the tenderness of His tones. The apostle Paul says "as though God were pleading through us: we implore you on Christ’s behalf, be reconciled to God". (2 Corinthians 5:20) What earnest, tender terms these are! How deep must be the love that makes the Lord weep over sinners, and like a mother, He tries to woo His children to His bosom! Surely our willing hearts will come at the call of such a cry.

Provision is made most abundantly, for all that we need to quench our souls’ thirst is already provided. To our conscience, the atonement brings peace; to our understanding the gospel brings the richest instruction; to our heart, the person of Jesus is the noblest object of affection; to our whole being, the truth as it is in Jesus that supplies the purest nourishment. Thirst is terrible, but Jesus can remove it. Though the soul was utterly famished, Jesus could restore it.

Proclamation is made most freely, that every thirsty one is welcome. No other distinction is made but that of thirst. Whether it be the thirst of greed, ambition, pleasure, knowledge, or rest, he who suffers from it is invited. Sin longs to be gratified with deeper drinks of lust, but it is not the goodness within us that brings Him the invitation, the Lord Jesus sends it freely, and without respect of persons.

Personality is declared most fully, for the sinner must come to the Person of Jesus, not to works, ordinances, or doctrines, but to a personal Redeemer, who Himself bore our sins in His own body on the Cross. (1 Peter 2:24) The bleeding, dying, rising Saviour, is the only star of hope to a sinner. Oh, for grace to come now and drink, before the sun sets upon the year's last day!

No waiting or preparation is even suggested. Drinking represents a receiving for which no prerequisite is required. A fool, a thief, a harlot can drink - so sinfulness of character is no hindrance to the invitation to believe in Jesus. We do not need a golden cup or a jewel-covered chalice in which to take the water to the thirsty; the mouth of poverty is welcome to stoop down and drink the flowing flood. Blistered, leprous, and filthy lips may touch the stream of divine love; they cannot pollute it, but they themselves will be purified by it.

Jesus is the fountain of hope.
Dear reader, hear the dear Redeemer's loving voice as He cries to each of us,
"If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink."

~ Time for Reflection ~
Jesus Quenches Our Thirst
Let us come to Jesus, bringing
all our needs and burdens. He
offers abundant grace and
satisfies every longing of our
hearts. No preparation or
qualification—just a
willingness to receive.

Amen.
