Since Jean Rondeau’s debut album almost a decade ago, he’s tried to take his listeners on a vast journey: all the way from the beginnings of harpsichord music in the 16th century to the very limits of what harpsichord can be in the 20th century. Along the way, he’s highlighted the infinities of Bach, the virtuosity of Scarlatti, the sublime grace of Bull and Byrd, and everything and everywhere in between and beyond.

With his upcoming project, he’ll be visiting music that sits not only at the core of the harpsichord repertoire but also deep within his own musical identity, going back to the beginning of his own journey as a harpsichordist.

With his tenth album with Erato (Warner Classics), Jean will be recording the complete works of Louis Couperin: nearly ten hours of music on seven discs, recorded on multiple instruments (including some of the preeminent antique organs and harpsichords in Europe) in several countries, altogether the product of years of work and intense musicological research. The release of the album in late 2025 will celebrate Couperin’s 400th birthday (1626–2026).

“I admit that I'm usually not too keen on recording the complete works of any one composer,” Jean says. “But Louis Couperin is different. For me, his music defines the essence of the harpsichord. There's something about Louis Couperin's music that transcends the instrument and inspires in a way that few other works can. I believe this recording project is one of the most important in my career as a keyboardist.”

Every aspect of the project has been thought through and carefully planned: the approach to the music, the instruments, the recording venues, the team, and the logistics of transporting over a dozen people and several harpsichords across thousands of kilometers over a six-week span.

Jean will dedicate eight months of 2024 exclusively to this recording project, during which he will be supported by his project team, including at Erato, which has invested unprecedented resources into the project. Still, to ensure that this recording—of unusual scope for a solo recording on historical instruments—reaches its full potential, he needs your support. Your contribution, no matter the size, will directly impact the success of the project and its ability to reach audiences worldwide.
