CHANIA & €15 FERRY FROM CRETE TO SANTORINI IN OCTOBER - Travelling Off Season In Greece

Описание к видео CHANIA & €15 FERRY FROM CRETE TO SANTORINI IN OCTOBER - Travelling Off Season In Greece

🧿A spur of the moment decision led to a 9 night trip to Greece end of October 2023. Flights were just £16 for my son and £19 for myself with EasyJet from Bristol to Crete. We also booked a ferry to Santorini for a few nights which were £13 each from Crete then flights back to Gatwick 5 days later all for the same price as what a 4nt package holiday would have cost us!! Here's what we got up to...🧿

Day 3 - Rethymno & Chania Crete 🇬🇷 28th of October
We caught a bus to Chania today; Chania is on the north west coast, around an hour drive from Rethymno, the 2nd largest town in Crete.
It has a Venetian district, Jewish district and a Turkish district - our favourite was the Venetian district it was so colourful and pretty! Every corner was a photo opportunity! The 14th century Venetian harbour Is filled with restaurants and bars and considering it’s the end of October, we were surprised how busy it was!
We caught the 4.30pm bus back and walked 15 minutes along the coastal path and past the fortezza fort back to the harbour while the sun was setting and then, to our apartment for showers and hot tub on our roof terrace.
Our last meal was gyros! We had a takeaway and sat on the balcony people watching …
28 degrees today in Chania! Hot but a bit cloudy .

Day 4 - Rethymno & Heraklion Crete 🇬🇷 29th of October
Today we move to another Greek island but not until late this evening and it doesn’t go as planned….
The clocks went back last night which meant I woke up to a beautiful pink sunrise from our balcony! The music from the bars and restaurants below us last night went on until the early hours celebrating Oxi day - the anniversary of ‘no’ “This day is celebrated in remembrance of the moment when the then prime minister of Greece, Ioannis Metaxas, refused to let the Italian troops enter Greece's border on October 28, 1940, during the Greco-Italian War”
The bars and restaurants didn’t open until around 11am and it was strangely quiet.
We didn’t have to leave until midday so we made the most of our time up on the rooftop terrace.
With our cases all packed we walked to the bus station and had brunch there while we waited for our 12.45pm bus to the capital, Heraklion.
It took an hour and a half and was full! We couldn’t sit next to each other… I wonder what would happen during the summer months?!
We found luggage storage at the bus station so left our larger cases there then found a bus stop (no 2) up the road from the station that took us to Knossos palace just 5k from the city. We couldn’t work out how to use the ticket machine so instead of paying €1.5 we paid €2.50 each!
Knossos palace was really interesting, a lot of ground to cover and we were there for around 3hrs. It costs us €23 and Oliver was half price as we are out of the EU!
While here I had a message from Ferryhopper to tell us that there’s a migrant issue around the port in Rhodes and there will be a delay. A short while later, we were told that instead of catching the 10.45pm ferry, we will now be catching the 2.20am ferry….
Thankful is wasn’t cancelled but gutted as the travel through the night will be tough. It’s only 3hrs to Santorini so we’ll arrive by 5.30am - I rang our taxi to change the times to meet us at the port so all ok, just a bit of a pain.
We decided to book a hotel room 10 min walk away from the port for £49 - it meant we could have showers, we could leave our cases in the room while we went for food, we could charge our phones and sleep if we could.
At 1.25am we walked to the port - there were lots of other passengers waiting for the ferry but wasn't super busy.
Who knew I’d be going back to Santorini so soon?! (we were there for 2wks in July 2022 - full 14 day vlogs on this channel) As mentioned previously, we saved so much money by moving islands (£13 each) so it made sense and it’s the closest island to Crete.
Next stop ..... Santorini....
