The United States has reportedly offered Ukraine a 15-year security guarantee aimed at strengthening the country’s long-term defense and deterring future attacks. Under the proposal, Washington would commit to supporting Ukraine’s security for the next 15 years and respond if Ukraine comes under renewed aggression.
However, Ukrainian officials have indicated that the offer does not fully meet their security needs. Given Ukraine’s geographical position and ongoing regional threats, Kyiv believes a much longer commitment—between 40 and 50 years—is necessary to ensure lasting stability and prevent future conflict.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has also addressed the sensitive issue of the Donetsk and Luhansk regions. He stated that Ukraine cannot fully give up these territories, despite most of them currently being under Russian control. Instead, Ukraine has proposed establishing a free economic zone in the region, while keeping Ukrainian forces deployed to maintain order and security.
Russia, meanwhile, has maintained that any peace agreement would require Ukraine to abandon its claims over Donetsk and Luhansk. In response, President Zelenskyy said Ukraine would only consider such proposals if a 60-day ceasefire is implemented first. He added that any final decision on the future of the disputed territories would be made through a nationwide referendum, allowing Ukrainian citizens to vote on the outcome.
