Описание к видео John Cage: Imaginary Landscape No.4 (Valle & Casella score - version for 12 samples from 1951)

In 2016, Andrea Valle and Amedeo Casella created a new version (available at https://iris.unito.it/retrieve/handle/2318...) of the score of John Cage's Imaginary Landscape No. 4, originally composed in 1951 for 12 radios and 24 operators. Valle & Casella transform the rather challenging notation of Cage's original score into something visually more similar to the way Cage presented his subsequent score for Imaginary Landscape No.5. Since IL-5 is a piece for recorded sound, Valle & Casella's new formulation of the score for IL-4 suggests (to me, at least) that this piece may also be realised for sampled recordings, replacing the radios of the original. This realization uses samples from a variety of genres of music recorded or composed in 1951. Performances of IL-4 using radios are often rather quiet, as the performer cannot guarantee that the radio frequency selected will produce any sound at the instant allocated for its entry into the performance. Sound, if produced at all, may often be simply hiss or crackle. With sampled sound, the converse problem arises, that of cacophonous overdubbing. However, just as Cage's subsequent IL-5 contains moments of calm, when very few samples are in focus, so does this version of IL-4. It may be legitimately remarked that the use of samples here removes one of the key elements of Cage's original conception of IL-4 - the sweep up and down the analogue radio frequency spectrum and the sonic variety it produces. A performance of IL-4 using radios, even when not generating hiss or silence, will not settle on any individual sound for anything like the length of time we hear fragments of samples in this realization. This is therefore perhaps not actually a realization of IL-4 at all, but rather something closer to IL-5, but produced with Valle & Casella's version of IL-4. Perhaps it is IL-4.5.
