The tale of Jessica Ruiz, a 26 year-old Philadelphia-basedmakeup artist—and a woman born with a congenital defect that prevents full movement in her arms and hands, which means she has to use her mouth to hold her makeup tools.

According to Yahoo Beauty, Ruiz began experimenting with makeup in middle school as a way to cope with the teasing she received from classmates. She began by placing eyeliner and mascara in her left hand and bending her head down to smudge them on. After seeing how it helped her self-esteem—and the compliments she received on how well she had applied it—a passion was born. By high school, she had graduated to doing her friends' makeup as well, using her mouth to steady her brushes. Then, after being turned down my multiple beauty schools, she eventually turned to YouTube tutorials to perfect her craft. Now it's a full-time career.

It's clear from looking at her Instagrams—both of the works she does on other people and on herself—that she's talented and not at all hindered by her lack of arm movement. From precise cat eyes to contouring, she does it all. She says, “I have some people that are booking me just because of the way that I do makeup now,” says Ruiz. “There are other people who really truly see this as equal and equivalent. The only difference is in the way that I apply makeup.”
