Mounted games was introduced to SA in 2000 by the Canadian National Mounted Games team. They ran clinics over the country and chose an invitational team to compete in the world team championships which they hosted. From this we have been driving the development of the sport which has taken off in the last few years. A solid base was established in KZN where Ian Marr, the Chairperson of MGASA lives.
After moving to Pretoria to study veterinary in 2012 I have been driving the development of MGA with the help of some key members such as Michelle Mackenzie and Felicia Rowan. One of our KZN riders, Dani Vinay, moved to Western Province to study, and has been driving the sport there. WP will be hosting their first interprovincial in April, which 2 Gauteng teams and 2 KZN teams will attend and compete against 3 of their teams.
SA has sent invitation teams to the World Team Champs in 2003, 2008, 2009 and 2014. SA pioneered and hosted an international in 2010, namely the Southern Hemisphere Championships. A team then travelled to New Zealand in 2011 and 2014 and to Australia in 2012 for the same competition. It was hosted by SA in 2013 where our team was victorious. The competition has grown and is now known as the 5 Nations, and includes Canada and USA.
MGASA is a registered NPO. We have been in the process of registering with SAEF for quite a while and registration with SASCOC will follow that.
2015 Sees a team travelling to Kentucky for the World Team Champs and to Australia for the 5 Nations Champs. In 2016 the interprovincial competition will be hosted by Gauteng, and South Africa will host the 5 Nations Champs. In 2017 we will be hosting the World Team Championships. These competitions require the borrowing and lending of ponies. The pony lenders receive a pony hire fee, as well as compensation for trucking the pony to the competition.
2 Riders at this competition today will travel to Kentucky: Daniel Ferreira and Megan Marr. Riders who have put their names forward for selection for the 5 Nations Championships are: Donnelly Mackenzie, Courtney Mackenzie, Sam Kruger, Dawie le Roux and Grace Quelly.
English Mounted Games is also recognised by SANESA so riders can also represent their school. We use a Facebook group to spread news, results and link up with MGA in other countries. The IMGA website is www.mounted-games.org
We hold an annual pairs and individual SA champs which is traditionally hosted by KZN in Ashburton as the majority of the riders are from there. Gauteng and WP are growing rapidly so SA champs will soon be held in other provinces.
