HOW TO MAKE NATURAL DYE WITH SUNFLOWER SEEDS | HOPI | ORGANIC COLOR | PURPLE LAVENDER BROWN BLACK

The black seeds from the Hopi sunflower (Tceqa' Qu' Si in Hopi) are a very unique way to create subtle purple and brownish hues from nature. From food to medicinal purposes, the Hopi have used these heirloom seeds for centuries in many ways, including a natural dye for basket weaving. The organic compound providing the purple color is heat sensitive, so care must be taken to gentle coax out the dye. This tutorial will show you two methods of extracting dye, as well as the resulting color fiber samples (wool, cotton & silk) with various pre-mordants including alum and soy milk.
