Downy and Hairy Woodpeckers

Описание к видео Downy and Hairy Woodpeckers

The Downy Woodpecker and the Hairy Woodpecker are almost identical and can be a first challenge for new birders. The Hairy Woodpecker is about 1/3 larger, but size can be deceiving if observed far away and with binoculars. This video gives a couple of easy visual ways to distinguish between these two common woodpeckers. I think when I see a Hairy at a feeder - "Wow!" and when I see a Downy at a feeder - "Cute!" Another way to distinguish them is by their calls: Downy Woodpecker's call descends while the Hairy Woodpecker's call does not. You can always use the Cornell Lab of Ornithology's free Merlin bird app to hear their calls. Enjoy the video! @natureinvestigations
