Apple's latest beta introduces exciting hiking features for the Apple Watch Ultra 2 and iPhone 15, set to roll out soon. In this test, I took the features for a spin in Joshua Tree National Park. Despite the 110°F heat, I explored the updated Maps app, which now includes popular hikes and custom route planning.

The new Maps app in iOS 18 offers hikers a seamless experience. Upon launching, you'll see popular hikes sorted by distance, with detailed elevation profiles and estimated times. Creating custom routes is straightforward, snapping to trails and allowing for easy modifications. Although the app integrates well with CarPlay for trailhead navigation, offline functionality is still a work in progress, as demonstrated by the beta's issues with offline maps on the Apple Watch.

A standout feature is the satellite messaging capability, akin to Garmin's inReach. While testing in an area with no cell service, the Apple Watch allowed me to send messages and share my location via satellite. Although still in beta, this feature promises to enhance safety by letting hikers communicate from remote areas. However, integration with existing apps like the Workout app and proper offline functionality needs improvement.

Apple's new hiking features show promise, especially with satellite messaging and enhanced route planning. However, some beta limitations, like offline map access and seamless app integration, need addressing. Once out of beta, these features could make the Apple Watch an indispensable tool for hikers. Stay tuned for a detailed follow-up once the final version is released. For more hiking tips and app recommendations, visit HikingGuy.com.
