Partizan Stadium, Belgrade; 25th of August, 2011.

Shamrock Rovers made Irish footballing history with a momentous 2-1 away victory over Serbian giants Partizan Belgrade at the Partizan Stadium in Belgrade. The result made the score 3-2 on aggregate and put Rovers into the group stage of the 2011-12 Europa League for the first time in their history; they were also the first Irish club ever to qualify for the group stage of a major European club competition.

Vladimir Volkov headed Partizan into a 1-0 lead after 35 minutes, only for Pat Sullivan to equalise for the Irish side with a stunning wonder-goal on 58 minutes. Rovers then won a penalty after the game went into extra-time and Stephen O'Donnell converted to ensure Rovers passage through to the group stage with only minutes to play. This away goal meant that Partizan would have had to have scored two goals without reply in the remaining six minutes to go through at Rovers' expense, but it was not to be for the Serbian side.
