This is a basic tutorial on how to find out your range of
frequencies you need to hit to help you tune your enclosure and also how to properly use a proper test tone to gain match based on your music choice rather than just guessing or using a random 0 db test tone you normally find online and losing out on some good output.





Okay, start off by downloading audacity

Drag some of your music over, i'm using
some random youtube downloads

Left click and drag to highlight parts
of the song with different basss notes

Then go to the Analyze tab and choose
plot spectrum

First drop of this song peaks 38hz at
-.05db

Other parts of the song hits 37-50hz at
around -4db to -2db

Safe to say, you'd want to use a -0db
40hz test tone to set your gains
if your whole library is comprised of
songs that peak at a high db like this

Here's another interesting feature to
see if you really have clean music or
not. Go to view and click show clipping

Red spots are clipping, some music are
recorded with clipping already, some
are due to bad mp3 conversion or people
boosting stuff they shouldnt. This is
a good way to weed out dirty bullshit
music from your library and keep your
setup nice and clean, signal wise.
Also if you are wondering, decaf is all
clean.

Lets do another song, a rock song this
time.

see how this one has next to no bass
under 40hz? Most of everything is in
the midbass region peaking at 73hz at
-9.9db If your music library all peaks
around that DB level then you will want
to use a -10 db 50hz test tone to set
your gains.

here's how to generate a test tone, go
to generate then tone, choose the
frequency then pick an amplitude 0 to -1

then plot spectrum to see where you are
really at with the db level, then play
with the amplitude until you are at the
desired db level for your test tone.

Another thing to note, if you listen
mainly to rock, metal, corridos, country
and other genres that peak in the midbass
region, dont tune your sub enclosure to
27-30hz unless your sub was made to have
strong top end response regardless of
tuning. Thats very rare though

you'd want to tune a bit higher to get
output on the regions you want. Dont go
based on other's tuning choices, analyze
your music spectrum and tune your
enclosure the way you want your music to
hit.
