Sepupz, you may remember the bullying case from just the other day, while we're expanding into it a little more and talking about cyberbullying in general, bringing back the Esha case as we think about Malaysia's cyberbullying pandemic.

Bullying in Malaysia is no longer just a problem—it has become a cultural pandemic. From schools to workplaces to the endless scroll of social media, the scars left by bullying cut across race, religion, and background. Stories like the tragic cases of Zara Qairina and Isha reveal how online cruelty can spiral into devastating consequences, with entire comment sections turning into battlefields where empathy disappears and anonymity shields perpetrators. When UNICEF ranked Malaysia second in Asia for cyberbullying, it wasn’t just a statistic; it was a mirror reflecting how deeply rooted the issue has become in our society.

But behind the headlines and the hashtags lies a bigger question: why has bullying taken hold so strongly in Malaysia’s culture? We have seen laws proposed and clauses introduced—the so-called “Esha clause,” amendments to the Penal Code, and statements from leaders like Fahmi Fadzil and Teo Nie Ching—but the reality is more complex. Legal measures might punish, but they rarely prevent. Victims remain trapped in systems that are slow, uncertain, and often stacked against them, while perpetrators continue to operate in the grey areas of “free speech.” This creates a vicious cycle where cruelty is normalized, and accountability is elusive.

The real challenge is cultural. If laws are the outer shield, then culture is the immune system, and right now Malaysia’s immune system is attacking itself. We are at a crossroads: either allow the toxic spiral of bullying to harden into permanence, or confront it by reshaping how we treat one another, both online and offline. This video is not just about statistics or scandals; it is about asking what kind of Malaysia we want to live in, and what kind of culture we are willing to build to protect the dignity of every person who calls this country home.
