Despite being two of the sweetest boys that have come through our rescue, Copper and Chessy had recently found themselves facing euthanasia at a local animal shelter due to a lack of adoption interest and medical issues. Copper and Chessy did not deserve to die alone in that shelter after everyone had given up on them, so we did everything we could to secure these boys their freedom.

Copper and Chessy were both recently rescued from death row at a local shelter. Lately, finding foster homes for these poor dogs in need has been painstakingly difficult. We thought that because Copper and Chessy are smaller dogs, we might be able to find a home willing to take them in, but so far we have had no luck. Copper and Chessy had both been scheduled for euthanasia, so we knew we had to get these boys out of the shelter. Copper was originally found as a stray in Georgia. He was adopted at the shelter, and moved with his new family to Florida, but was then surrendered by his adopters to a shelter in Palm Beach County. We believe his family may have given him up after learning that Copper is Heartworm positive. Heartworm Disease is preventable with the proper monthly medication, however, it can be fatal if left untreated. Parasitic worms clog the major arteries leading to the heart, eventually sending the poor infected animal into cardiac arrest. We do not know if Copper became infected with Heartworm Disease before or after he was adopted in Georgia. We cannot think of another reason why someone would want to give this poor boy up. Copper is such a sweet dog, and we are devastated that his adopters gave up on him. We were also able to rescue Copper's friend, Chessy. We don't know much about Chessy, other than that he has an incredible grin that reminded us of the Cheshire Cat from Alice in Wonderland - and so he was named Chessy! Without available fosters, we will be spending hundreds of dollars to place Copper and Chessy in a boarding facility. While a home environment is much better for their adjustment and doesn't require us to spend money we would otherwise reserve for vet care, we are grateful that these boys are alive and safe.

After an incredible group effort by many of our dedicated volunteers, Copper and Chessy got their freedom ride out of the Palm Beach shelter. These boys will go into quarantine at the boarding facility for two weeks while they receive some much-needed vet care and rest. They may not know it yet but these boys have begun their journey to brighter days. We are hopeful that once these boys are out of quarantine we will have found foster homes ready to welcome them. Copper will also begin Heartworm treatment shortly.
