Gibraltar Ceremony of the Keys 2024

Gibraltar Ceremony of the Keys is a traditional military event that commemorates the historical practice of securing the gates of the British Overseas Territory. Dating back to the 18th century, it symbolizes the defense and protection of Gibraltar by locking the fortress gates at sunset and reopening them at sunrise. The ceremony is reenacted with military precision by soldiers dressed in historical uniforms, often accompanied by a military band.

During the event, the Governor of Gibraltar or his representative formally hands the keys of the fortress to the Port Sergeant, who locks the gates as a symbolic gesture of protection. The ceremony is a colorful and lively reminder of Gibraltar’s strategic importance throughout history, and it highlights the strong British military presence on the Rock. It attracts both locals and tourists and takes place several times a year, often on significant historical anniversaries.
