Jackie Coogan (US)

b: 26 Oct 1914 (Los Angeles)
d: 1 Mar 1984

"Certainly the greatest child superstar of the silent period, and only equalled to Shirley Temple after the coming of the sound, Jackie was born if not in a trunk, at least with the roar of greasepaint loud about him.

At a perilously age early age he was crawling on to the vaudeville stage in his parents' comedy act, and soon became an established and adored part of it.

When he was four, the faithful encounter with Charlie Chaplin took place.
Chaplin saw him in a revuea at the Orpheum Theatre il Los Angeles, and went round to meet him. Among Jackie's first words to the great man (by Chaplin's account) were: 'I'm a prestidigitator who works in a world of legerdemain' - whereupon Chaplin, duly dumbfounded, exclaimed to Coogan père: 'This is the most remarkable person I have ever met'. The story sounds too good to be true, but whatever really was said, Chaplin put Jackie straight into his next comedy, 'A Day's Pleasure', and a year later gave him the co-starring title role in his first full-lenght film, 'The Kid'".
