More than a thousand youngsters have formed a human chain in protest at environmental destruction around Peru's capital, Lima.

The event on Friday was part of a World Environment Day and focused on the only surviving protected natural environment within Lima's contaminated urban sprawl, the Pantanos de Villa (Villa Lakes).

Lima is well acquainted with the effects of environmental destruction.

Pollution levels in the city as a result of traffic and industrial fumes have become a serious blight on public health.

A slow moving file of traffic crawled out of Lima, Peru, towards the city's last natural reserve on Friday.

But this was not the usual traffic jam.

The roads along the way were lined with more than a thousand children from local schools taking part in an environmental demonstration.

The vehicles themselves drove as far as the Pantanos de Villa (Villa Lakes) - Lima's last protected natural reserve.

The lakes, directly overshadowed by the Lucchetti video manufacturers, are considered a threatened but valuable shelter for wildlife.

The treeless landscape of the surrounding countryside, such as that seen here, is a sore reminder that these fears are not unfounded.

"We, with the Ministry of Education, have been working for a long time now and recently, in the last two years, we have focused on the aspect of reforestation. And with the support of the educational sector we planted last year nearly young trees in all our jurisdiction also as a symbolic way of saying trees give life, trees are health and you have to look after them."

The event comes on the back of continued efforts to raise the public profile of green issues.

And this was an alliance between not just Peru's younger generation but Lima's health organisations.

But it is the youngest generations who will lose the most if modern Peru does not take note.
