Putin’s Story | The Puppet Show Banned In Russia (Kukly NTV 2000)

Kukly was the Russian equivalent of Spitting Image, a satirical British puppet show. The Russian version was highly critical of Russia's new political establishment and the star of the show, while it lasted, was Vladimir Putin. This episode presented the story of acting President Putin as a satire based on Little Zaches, an 1819 German fairytale fantasy novel, written by Ernst Hoffman.

The ugly child Zaches is bewitched by the good fairy Rosabelverde so that the philistines see him as beautiful. All of his shameful and disgusting deeds are attributed to others while the good traits of others are ascribed to Zaches, who changes his name to Zenober. Only the melancholic student Balthazar can see Zaches for what he really is. Artists also have this ability. The character of Little Zaches was used to parody Vladimir Putin with the role of the fairy behind Zaches magic powers being assigned to Jewish oligarch and TV media tycoon Boris Berezovsky.
