I decided to take the homemade car mount for a ride. After securing the suction cups with an additional 4 straps hooked to the car, we placed the Komodo with a canon 24-70 on the Ronin 2 and prayed real hard!
Since I wanted to play with the different focal, I mounted the Tilta Nucleus Nano (a follow focus) onto the zoom ring, this worked fairly good except when the camera was tilting up as the weight of the barrel would put too much resistance on the gears and eventually the Nucleus would go in safe mode and had to be rebooted manually.
All the footage you see was filmed with the Komodo in autofocus, it did a pretty good job overall except a few times in challenging situations (you can see the focus jumping in some shots if you look closely). I thought I would use the RED control app to pull focus but I didn't, giving more attention to the actual framing and exposure.
Also, I need a proper ND filter, the PMVND 1-5 set to the max at 5 did a terrible job with some heavy color shift in the sky.
With the Tilta hydra alien car mount now on the market for a quite "affordable" price tag, maybe it's time to look at their system a bit more seriously?
