The readings for the 3rd Sunday of #Advent, or Gaudete Sunday Year C, center on joyful anticipation and hope as we prepare for the coming of the Lord. The name "Gaudete" is derived from the Latin word meaning "Rejoice," which is the opening word of today's entrance antiphon.
Thus, the "Day of the Lord" had positive connotations of social and liturgical celebration. Zephaniah reverses this image: the coming "day of the Lord" he foresees will not be a time of feasting and celebration, but a day of "distress and anguish, ruin and devastation darkness and gloom.
In today's Gospel, John the Baptist tells us that there are people who can be compared to precious grain, while others, in God's eyes, are useless chaff or husk. The winnowing fork metaphor reflects apocalyptic themes common in Jewish eschatology, emphasizing divine justice and the separation of the righteous (grain) from the wicked (chaff).
