In his second fight in the WEC, featherweight champion-to-be Jose Aldo faced off against future Ultimate Fighter cast member Jonathan Brookins. The fight took place on the un-aired preliminary card of WEC 36.

Headlining the card was a 145 pound title fight between Mike Brown and Urijah Faber, two champions of the weight class that Aldo would subsequently defeat along his path towards being regarded as one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the sport. At the time of the Brookins fight in November 2008, however, Aldo was a little known prospect out of Brazil's Nova Uniao camp, and in the shadow of his then better known featherweight teammate, Wagnney Fabiano. Despite his relative anonymity at the time among casual fans, Aldo came into the fight as a heavy favorite to beat Brookins. Oddsmakers listed him at a closing line of -430, compared to Brookins at +350.

Brookins held his own against the dynamic young Brazilian fighter for two full rounds until Aldo finally found his mark just a few seconds into the start of the third. Brookins stepped in with a lazy and soft right hand, which Aldo immediately countered with a pawing left and then a crushing right that connected on Brookins's chin and dropped him to the mat. Disoriented but trying to remain in the fight, Brookins was too wobbly to stand back up, and then tried to grab Aldo's legs for a takedown. Aldo unloaded a series of hammer-fists and other strikes until referee Troy Waugh had seen enough, calling a stop to the action at 0:45 of the third round.

The fight would be Brookins' last in the WEC, and it would also be Aldo's last fight on the preliminary card.
