Cyclone Montha intensified into a severe cyclonic storm on Tuesday morning and is expected to make landfall along the Andhra Pradesh coast between Machilipatnam and Kalingapatnam, near Kakinada, by evening or night, the IMD said.

The state is likely to face extremely heavy rainfall and strong winds, with an orange alert issued for Peddapalli, Jayashankar Bhupalpally and Mulugu districts, while northeastern districts are under a yellow alert.

Train and flight operations have been disrupted ahead of landfall. In Odisha, 30 Andhra fishing boats have been sheltered at Gopalpur Port. Andhra Pradesh CM N Chandrababu Naidu has directed officials to evacuate residents from vulnerable coastal areas, ensure food and water supply, and monitor relief operations. Nearly 50,000 people have been shifted to relief camps as disaster response teams work to relocate families from low-lying areas.
