The dictatorship years known as the Porfiriato had ended, but in the Peninsula de Yucatan the slavery was still a reality.
Felipe Carrillo Puerto, then governor of the state, paid with his life for the support of the Mayans in the middle of the political crisis after the revolution. Alma Reed, and american jounalist had travelled to Mexico when she met and fell in love with Felipe Carrillo Puerto. He wanted a beautiful moment with hers to be immortalized with a song, and that is how this beautiful song remains to our days, to leave us the memory of two people who defended the oppresed and whose souls were meant to be together.
