Balancing Classic Yacht Design with Cutting-Edge Performance Systems

Tom Degrémont, Naval Architect at Langan Design Partners, explains the design philosophy behind Project Ouzel—a modern classic that honors traditional yacht-building materials while incorporating state-of-the-art performance systems.

"[Ouzel is a] balance of what's classic and what's new. The noble materials that this boat has been of the highest quality," Degrémont explains. "That's a very classic element of this. On the performance side, the systems are very modern. They’re the best, the most high performance systems we could put in a boat this size."

Ouzel represents a unique combination: classic materials and a classic approach to yacht design paired with high-end performance materials, systems, and hardware. "There are much bigger yachts, but she has the features of these large yachts in a smaller package," Degrémont notes. The development process and collaborative effort across partners elevated the entire project beyond what any single firm could achieve alone.

About Project Ouzel:

Ouzel is a 95-foot performance world cruiser designed by Langan Design Partners with exterior styling assistance and interiors by Mark Whiteley Design, and built by Rockport Marine using a wood-composite construction technique. This method combines an engineered blend of cold-molded wood, carbon fiber, E-glass, and foam coring to create lightweight, strong, and thermally efficient hulls. Designed for comfortable long-range cruising with the performance to race when opportunity arises, Ouzel represents a return to the proud tradition of New England builders handcrafting large yachts through collaborative effort across the region and globally.

The technical launch at Rockport Marine marks the final stages of a three-year creative collaboration between clients, yacht design, and yacht-building firms from Rockport to Newport in the U.S. and Lymington, U.K.
