Mysore (officially Mysuru), is the second largest city in the state of Karnataka. It is also the second largest urban agglomeration in Karnataka in population. It is located in the foothills of the Chamundi Hills about 146 km (91 mi) southwest of Bangalore and spread across an area of 152 sq km (59 sq mi). The estimated population is 10,14,227 as of 2017.
It served as the capital city of the Kingdom of Mysore for nearly six centuries from 1399 until 1956. The Kingdom was ruled by the Wadiyar dynasty, with a brief period of interregnum in the 1760s and 70s when Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan were in power.

Mysore Palace is a historical palace and a royal residence of the Wadiyar dynasty and the seat of the Kingdom of Mysore. It is located in the centre of the city, and faces the Chamundi Hills eastward.
The land on which the palace now stands was originally known as puragiri (literally, citadel), and is now known as the Old Fort. Yaduraya built the first palace inside the Old Fort in the 14th century, which was demolished and constructed multiple times. The current structure was constructed between 1897 and 1912, after the Old Palace was burnt ablaze.
Mysore Palace is now one of the most famous tourist attractions in India, after the Taj Mahal, with more than 6 million annual visitors.
