Mourão Alentejo Portugal HD

Mourão is a beautiful village in the Alentejo, on the left bank of the immense Guadiana River, near the border with Spain, in a place of great natural beauty.

Without major historical references until the Christian reconquest of the Iberian Peninsula, it is known that after passing to the Portuguese domain, it was handed over to the Order of Hospitallers, and during the Middle Ages and in the Restoration War it was the scene of violent episodes between Portuguese and the Castillian forces.

Mourão has always been influenced by the great Guadiana River, which has also contributed to the fertility of the surrounding lands where olive, almond and other fruit trees shape the landscape.

Mourão is proud of its monuments and traditions, like the Castle above the village and the Baroque Mother Church of Our Lady of the Candeias (17th and 18th centuries).

This typical Alentejo village excels by its regional products, such as handicrafts, with pieces in shale, basketry or in the very traditional Buínho.
The various restaurants in the region attest to the quality of Alentejo gastronomy, with local specialties such as Caldeirada de Peixe, Açorda de Cação or conventual sweets with soggy or rancid cake, not forgetting the bread, cheese, honey and olives from this tasty region.
