We talked to debut author Emma Flint about Little Deaths, her gripping literary crime novel published by Picador.

Telling the story of Ruth Malone, a young mother in 1960s New York who is accused of murdering her two children, Little Deaths takes as its inspiration a real-life case. Here Flint talks about when she first encountered the story, some of the discoveries she made in researching what happened, and the process of adapting true events to fiction.

Originally wanting to be a pathologist, Flint describes how, after reading a captivating account of the Dr Crippen case (The Mild Murderer by Tom Cullen, sadly out of print) she was inspired pursue a creative outlet for her interest in true crime. The result is Little Deaths, a gripping novel about an unthinkable crime, justice and injustice, and the objectification of its female protagonist.
