As unprecedented rainfall continues to batter Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh since last week, normal life has been severely disrupted across the region.

In Punjab, as many as 29 lives have been lost between August 1 and September 1 on account of rain-related incidents. A total of 1,044 villages across 12 districts in the State have been affected.

Himachal Pradesh has been one of the worst affected. Since the onset of monsoon on June 20, the hill State has witnessed 91 instances of flash floods, 45 cloudbursts, and 105 landslides. Over 161 people have died due to rain-related incidents and 154 in road accidents have occurred. As many as 845 houses have been fully damaged, while 3,254 houses have been partially damaged.

The Haryana government directed all field officers to remain at their headquarters till September 5 after the IMD warned of heavy rainfall in different parts of the State in the coming days.

Meanwhile, authorities in Delhi advised on September 1 people living in the Yamuna floodplain to move to safety as the water level of the river rose steadily. Around 15,000 people reside in low-lying areas across six districts of Delhi, while around 5,000 people stay in the floodplain.
