Transcript:
When you talk to people with diabetes, invariably what they will tell you is, “I wish I could take a vacation from this disease. I wish that I could turn it off for a little bit.” It's always there. It's 24/7. They need the support to be able to deal with something 24/7.

Frequently, people say the problem is that they're just noncompliant. I hate that term. Ask yourself a very simple question. The last time you were given a ten-day course of antibiotics for an upper respiratory tract infection, a urinary tract infection, whatever, and there were 40 pills in that bottle, four times a day take a pill. At the end of ten days, how many pills were left in the bottle?

Even the most compliant patients frequently miss a dose. That's just with one pill four times a day. Now we're talking about every minute of every day: what do I eat, when I'm going to exercise, when is my next meal, what medicine have I already taken, what medicine do I need to take, what's my blood sugar now, what's it going to be after I finish my exercise? This is a constant disease. It never goes away.

If we can make it easier for people with diabetes to live with their disease in a healthy manner so that they don't have to be thinking about it 24/7, if we are able to integrate a healthy lifestyle into their daily lives with the appropriate support, everybody will benefit.
