Join me on my first-ever solo trip!

🌱🐷⛰️🗿🌊

I knew that once I was set to study abroad in South Korea that I'd have to visit Jeju Island. Since I wasn't sure how easy traveling during the semester might be, I decided to come to Korea a bit early to spend a week traveling in the southern parts of the country that I may not be able to enjoy in day trips from my university in Seoul. The first part of my week was spent in Jeju Island, which is off the southwestern coast of the Korean Peninsula. Formed by a volcanic eruption, the island is made of beautiful volcanic rock, covered in lush flora, and has gorgeous ocean views that I was so grateful to be able to explore.

Though it's a relatively small island (you could technically drive around its diameter a couple times in a day), Jeju is actually quite vast and to fully enjoy it as a tourist, you'd probably want to reserve at least week. Since I only gave myself three days, I chose to focus on the places I wanted to see mainly in the western half of the island, which spanned from (western) Seogwipo to Jeju City.

As for the transportation, I managed to get to alllll of these places by bus and foot throughout my stay. Though a car may have made getting from Point A to Point B more straightforward and timely, I didn't that using the buses was a hindrance or took away opportunities from my travels. As you can see, I still managed to do SO much in each day, even when I would mess up 😅 The bus routes are posted and reliable (ever since Jeju did an upgrade on their system a few years ago), and time tables are posted at every bus stop, though not all of them have a digital system as well. The main thing I think you may notice is simply that not all of Jeju's bus lines are synced to online systems like most of the mainland is, which is why many routes report "No ETA" when you search for them on Naver, making it can be harder to plan if you don't know how long you might have to wait for your bus. However, I noticed that many of the main routes, like the 202 line that goes up and down the west coast, were consistently updated online. I think you hear a lot of people who might say that traveling throughout Jeju on public transportation is not ideal or that you need to rent a car to enjoy it, but I hope that you can see through my experience that neither of those statements are true.

I had a wonderful time on the island and I hope to go back someday! For anyone interested in solo travel, I definitely think Jeju Island is a wonderful place to do so.

Thank you so much for watching!
