This audio is created by sonifying real data from the Carina Nebula, one of the largest star-forming regions in our galaxy. The visuals used come from the James Webb Space Telescope, and the brightness, color, and position of different features in the image are converted into sound.

During sonification, the image is scanned from left to right. Brighter areas become louder sounds, and the height of each feature in the image controls its pitch. Stars are represented with short, sharp tones, while gas and dust clouds are translated into ambient, atmospheric sounds. The upper regions of the nebula create higher and more airy tones, and the lower, denser areas produce deeper melodies.

These are not sounds recorded in space. They are scientifically guided audio translations that help people experience astronomical data in a new way. Sonification is also used to make space imagery accessible for blind and low-vision audiences.
