Looking for unique? Architecturally significant hilltop Modernist home owned by the same family since 1969. A very special home with an interesting provenance. The owner was one of the largest concrete forming contractors in Toronto and pioneers of architectural concrete. He built such iconic exposed textured concrete buildings such as John Robarts Library at the University of Toronto, The Ontario Science Centre, and the old Four Seasons Hotel as well as the Bank of Montreal, Royal Bank and Sun Life buildings in downtown Toronto. 

The original owner and the architect he hired, Morton Katz, a professor at University of Toronto at the time, were great admirers and connoisseurs of Le Corbusier, hailed as the father of modern architecture. Le Corbusier designed his buildings in a minimalist style using mainly exposed concrete as his building material. As such, the architecture of the house is of the school of Le Corbusier, however it is softened by a Frank Lloyd Wright "Prairie" style of architecture.

The owner was also a great admirer of Frank Lloyd Wright whose architectural philosophy is reflected in many aspects of the house including the lower ceilings in many of the rooms. Wright's view created a more "intimate" and calming ambiance. He liked to use more wood in the interior of his houses than Le Corbusier. One will find this style reflected in the maple wood ceilings of the living and dining rooms of this 8,000 +/- square foot, poured concrete residence.

Wright was very focused on designing his houses to take advantage of and fit into their natural setting (his 'Fallingwater' house in Pennsylvania is a prime example). The structure was built on top of a sandy hill surrounded by 17+ acres to take advantage of the beautiful views, the movement of the sun and to be surrounded by nature to relax and rejuvenate one's physical, psychological and spiritual wellness. The house is shaped somewhat like a sundial, with the straight wall facing north, the bedrooms catching the morning sun, and the common areas oriented to take advantage of the afternoon sun. The floor to ceiling windows bring the beautiful natural setting into the house.

The wooden forms used to pour and set the concrete of the house were old 2" X 12" barn boards, which were sourced from an old farmhouse in the area, hence the beautiful blondish hue in many of the interior walls, which fibres of wood are still embedded in the concrete.
