In this lecture, we take a complete deep dive into Binary Subtraction — one of the core operations in the binary number system and a foundation for many digital circuit designs. We begin by explaining the basic rules of binary subtraction for all possible bit combinations:
0 – 0 = 0 (no borrow)
1 – 0 = 1 (no borrow)
1 – 1 = 0 (no borrow)
0 – 1 = 1 (borrow required)

From here, we explain what borrowing means in binary, how it differs from decimal borrowing, and why in binary subtraction we add "2" (binary 10) to the current column when borrowing from the next higher bit. You’ll see exactly how the borrow propagates if the immediate next bit is also 0, and how to handle chain borrows across multiple bits.

We then work through multiple examples step-by-step, showing the subtraction process bit-by-bit from right to left. Every borrow, sum, and intermediate step is clearly explained so you’ll never get lost. We also verify each binary subtraction example by converting the binary numbers to decimal, performing the subtraction in decimal, and then converting the result back to binary — this way, you can confirm your answers with confidence.
