Most of us do not have any idea that so many abandoned zamindar palaces are scattered throughout the country. As per my observation, the number of those abandoned houses will not be fewer than 500. I was astonished by the number myself. In my mind, I took the preparation to explore those abandoned palaces as I wanted to discover the historical background of the amazing old buildings. Here, I am going to tell you about one of them, ‘Lokma Zamindar Bari’.Very close to the India-Bangladesh border, there is a rural area called Lokma under Panchbibi upazila, about 22 km northwest of Joypurhat district headquarter. Ruins of a palace constructed more than 200 years ago still exists there. The palace was ‘lost’ for 60 years, as it was covered by a jungle.Leaving behind the thrilling story of the palace, let us come to its structural details. The central palace was a three-storied building. But as time passed, the ground floor sank under the ground, leaving the top two floors on the surface. The prime attractions of the palace compound are some sculptures and statues. Once, the palace had dozens of bedrooms, but in the course of time, those have turned into ruins.As the local people believe in superstition and so many heart-breaking stories abound of the zamindars (feudal lords), they started considering the fallen palace as a haunted one. Who knows if the palace is haunted or not? But there is no doubt that the palace still bears amazing architectural designs of those bygone days.Every day, a few curious travellers visit the area to get a glimpse of the ‘haunted’ abandoned palace. But unfortunately, there is no one to take care of the old palace at present. If initiative for maintenance is not taken immediately, we are going to lose one of the most fascinating zamindar palaces that is of significant heritage value as well.Warning: Being too adventurous can be dangerous as ‘no man’s land’ is very close to the abandoned palace. It is a risky place in terms of safety and security.
