GRETCHEN LIMA: LA PLÁSTICA AFRO-CUBANA / AFRO-CUBAN VISUAL ARTS (2022), ca. 38 minutes. This testimonial documentary by Juanamaría Cordones-Cook is part of the collection FÉMINA Y RAZA EN CUBA / FEMALE AND RACE IN CUBA that presents the voices of five remarkable Cuban female intellectuals, María del Carmen Barcia, Gisela Arandia, Norma Rita Guillard, Gretchen Lima, and Georgina Herrera, with reflections on Havana’s Black Renaissance, the flourishing of an unprecedented Afro-Cuban intelligentsia generated after 1959. Here Gretchen Lima explains the open access to art education offered by the Cuban Revolution, which brought the development of artists, as well as public education in art appreciation. She presents an overview of Afro-Cuban Visual Arts and discusses the most prominent visual artists who came of age after 1959. She mentions a couple of their forefathers, Wifredo Lam y Roberto Juan Diago Querol, as well as some dynasties of black artists. Illustrated with images of beautiful artwork, this testimonial documentary opens and closes with a walk-through Gretchen Lima’s own beautiful contemporaneous Afro-Cuban art collection.
